Equinor is involved in offshore and onshore oil and gas production in the United States. Equinor has been active in the development and production of onshore oil and gas in the US including fracking since 2009. The Gulf of Mexico is a core area for Equinor today. As operator of Titan, partner in eight more producing fields and with two fields in development, Equinor is one of the most active companies in the Gulf of Mexico.
Equinor has faced huge opposition over its fracking operations in USA due to the severe health and environmental impacts. Fracking is known to be a particularly dirty form of fossil fuel extraction, evidenced to lead to water and land pollution, earthquakes and many negative short-term and long-lasting health effects. The practice is banned in many countries. As per 2023, Equinor was operating 72 fracking-plants in the US. Gas fracking reportedly accounts for a third of all Equinor's foreign operations.
